Silverfish Pest Control Products from DIY Pest Control
Silverfish grow to approximately 20 mm in length and are cigar shaped with 3 bristles at the narrow tail end and long, thin antennae on the head. Metallic silver in colour.
Frequently found in damp, humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms where they emerge at night to feed on scraps of food, although they are also capable of digesting cellulose and so can gain nourishment from paper, book bindings etc. and have been known to attack textiles. Often found trapped in baths and sinks, as they cannot climb smooth surfaces. In kitchen cupboards, they may be found in cups or under cutlery trays and beneath coverings in kitchen drawer units.
This insect is common throughout Britain, living indoors only. The silverfish has an incomplete lifecycle (the eggs hatch into a small version of the adult and grow by a series of skin moults). A female lays up to 100 eggs over a period of around 2 months, in cracks and crevices, which hatch directly into the nymphal stage (a small version of the adult). The young take up to 1 year to achieve adulthood. The adults can live longer than three years and possibly up to 5 years under optimum conditions.
