The adult house mouse has a combined head and body length of between 70 - 90mm and a tail length of between 55 - 75mm. The colour varies from light grey to dark brown.
House mice are common in all types of buildings, from garden huts and barns to houses and business premises. Although mainly a house dweller, this mouse may live outdoors for part or all of the year. When indoors, the most likely areas of evidence are in kitchens where there will be food in abundance, even in scraps of food that may be spilled behind cookers or fridges, and where fitted cupboards give harbourage for them to move around undisturbed.
In airing cupboards where they will often find warmth for nesting under the floorboards and where heating and water pipes allow a natural conduit for moving from one area to another.
Lofts or under floors where they may move from one house to an adjoining one and from there to other levels of the house in their search for warmth and food. House mice are excellent climbers and have no difficulty climbing through restricted gaps or squeezing under gaps at the base of doors.
