House Flies
Light brown/greyish in colour with 4 narrow black stripes on the thorax (section behind the head). The Common House Fly is slightly larger than the Lesser House Fly being about 7mm in length. House flies are very common in houses, the Common House Fly feeding and laying its eggs on foodstuffs of many different kinds but especially decaying or rotting meat and moist organic matter. The Lesser House fly is the one that is often seen flying around the lights or flying quickly in a straight line then suddenly changing direction.
Cluster Fly
The Cluster fly is about 6mm in length with a wing span of around 10mm.Mottled grey/brown in colour with yellow-gold hairs covering the thorax (mid section), by which they can be recognised, and a bristly abdomen. They are slightly larger than a house fly.
As the name implies, these flies can cause a nuisance through their habit of "clustering" together in their thousands, usually in roof spaces. They are a particular nuisance in Autumn when they are looking for a roof void to spend the winter, and again in Spring when they start to emerge as the weather turns warmer.
Often these flies will migrate from their overwintering into rooms below or into attics that may have been converted into living accommodation. Cluster flies will very often return to the same roof spaces year after year, usually to houses on a hill with countryside around or nearby, but not exclusively.
Fruit Flies
The Fruit Fly is only about 2mm in length with a wingspan of between 3mm and 4mm. The body is of normal fly shape with a cross-striped pattern across the abdomen. The general body colour is greyish yellow.
These flies feed mainly on fermenting products and materials, usually of a fruit origin but also in beer, cider, wine and vinegar. In flight they are slow movers with the abdomen hanging down in flight. They are a nuisance indoors and where they are active, may be found in glasses of wine and such. Some species will feed on rotting vegetables and can sometimes be seen in great numbers where these vegetables are left exposed.
