Fleas Pest Control Products from DIY Pest Control The Cat Flea is about 2mm in length and is a very dark mahogany colour. The body of all fleas appears very flat laterally, and has a distinct look unlike any other insect. The hind legs are long, very strong and well developed for jumping. Cat Fleas, in particular have become a common pest in houses in the UK, partly due to the ideal environment of centrally heated houses keeping a comfortable temperature throughout the year. A light population of fleas in a house will usually go unnoticed by the human occupants as the fleas will feed exclusively on the cat or dog host. Only when the host is temporarily removed or the flea population grows to an infestation level are the human inhabitants likely to be aware of them. One or two people in the house may be affected by the bites of fleas, usually to the lower parts of legs. Mainly women or children are affected , it is thought due to their more sensitive skins. Cat fleas can live and breed by feeding on cats or on dogs, the dog flea likewise can feed and breed on cats as well as dogs. Neither, however, can breed while exclusively feeding on human blood, although if necessary they will feed entirely on human blood where there is no other choice for the duration of their lives.
