Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella)
The adult moth has a maximum size of around 8mm in length. Yellow/brown in colour with "feather edged" fore and hind wings. The wings are held alongside the body when at rest.
It is the larval stage that does the damage to textiles. The total life cycle takes between 3 months and 12 months depending on humidity, temperature, and the quality of the food product.
The eggs are laid among clothing or carpet fibres. The eggs are very difficult to see as they are small, whitish, and laid deep in the folds of the fabric or in among the hairs of the carpet. In a period of between a few days and a month, the eggs hatch and the resultant larvae immediately start to spin a fine tube around themselves to protect from dehydration. This tube is formed in the particles of the clothing and excreta, which camouflages the tube. This becomes home to the larvae from where they will emerge at night to feed and returning at daybreak to the safety of the tube. The larva moults several times before pupation commences. The pupa is formed inside the final larval case and develops to the adult stage in 2 to 6 weeks. The adults do not feed and they only live a short time. The adult female does not fly and the male flies rarely.
