Variegated Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci)
Adult Beetle - Variegated Carpet Beetles look like small ladybirds but with an attractive pattern of yellow, black and whitish scales covering all the body. They are between 1.5 and 3.5 mm in length, their body being more rounded than other dermestid beetles that are usually found in houses.
Larva - The larvae are sometimes known as "woolly bears". They are yellow-brown and hairy and grow to between 4 and 5 mm in length. At the rear end are tufts of long hair. When the larva feels threatened it can roll itself into a ball shape and erect these tufts to warn off possible predators
The adult beetle lays her eggs in suitable food material for the resultant larvae. This is usually in birds nests but can be laid in woollen carpets and clothes. They are also a pest of museums and insect collections. The larvae are known to wander around in the search of more suitable food and an infestation in a carpet area can sometimes be traced back to a roof void containing old birds nests or dead carrion. The larvae conceal themselves quite well and when attacking a carpet will usually prefer the edges near skirtings or under furniture or table legs.
