There are many species of beetles that can be present in the home or other habitted environments. Here are some of the most common.
Fur Beetle (Attagenus pellio)
In domestic premises, the most likely source of an infestation is a loft space where the insects may originate from an old birds nest and may migrate into rooms below where they may cause damage to materials such as carpets and possibly into clothes drawers and wardrobes. If these insects are first discovered in an upstairs room or a room directly below a roof space, it is advisable to check and insecticide treat the roofspace as well as the affected areas.
Variegated Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci)
Adult Beetle - Variegated Carpet Beetles look like small ladybirds but with an attractive pattern of yellow, black and whitish scales covering all the body. They are between 1.5 and 3.5 mm in length, their body being more rounded than other dermestid beetles that are usually found in houses.
Larva - The larvae are sometimes known as "woolly bears". They are yellow-brown and hairy and grow to between 4 and 5 mm in length. At the rear end are tufts of long hair. When the larva feels threatened it can roll itself into a ball shape and erect these tufts to warn off possible predators.
Biscuit Beetle (Stegobium paniceum)
The Biscuit Beetle is between 2 and 3 mm in length of a medium, matt-brown in colour and of an elongate oval shape. The antennae end in a 3-segmented "club" and the wing cases have fine ridges running along their length. These beetles are fairly common throughout the British Isles, mainly feeding on foods containing starch. They are a close relative to the Furniture Beetle (Woodworm) and are hardly distinguishable from them. Their areas of infestation should give an immediate indication of the appropriate species. This beetle is a good flyer which aids it's dispersal and they are extremely efficient at entering most forms of packaging. They are an important pest of the food industry especially in smaller shop storerooms usually in older stocks of biscuits, crispbread, pasta or breakfast foods. They also appear in houses, usually from old stocks of food products but rapidly spread from them to newer stocks.
